I had the pleasure of working directly for MajGen Mattis in Ramadi, Iraq in 2004 as he commanded the 1st Marine Division. I wouldn’t say he was the funniest General Officer there (BGen Kelly was), but he has a fine sense of humor and quick dry wit. On June 15th, 2018 he repeatedly attempted to clear his throat during his commencement speech at the Naval War College. Finally, a sympathetic member of the staff placed a bottle of water on the podium as he continued his speech.
