Colonel John Atkinson, USMC is the Commanding Officer of Headquarters & Service Company, Marine Corps Base Quantico Virginia; one of his “collateral duties” is to be the active duty commanding officer of the marathon operations — an operation that encompasses two states, a federal district, approximately fourteen law enforcement agencies, countless first responders and the movements of approximately 100,000 runners and attendees — no small secondary job.
