US Navy LTJG George Bush was shot down piloting his dive bomber on an attack run on a Japanese radio transmitter located on the island of ChiChi Jima in the western Pacific Ocean on the 2nd of September 1944. The story is an amazing one — from his escape from the aircraft, his parachute ride that did not go as planned, a wingman who dropped a life raft and then the improbable arrival of the USS Fishback.
