As I’ve learned about community based mental health I’ve been encouraged about its future.  Today, we’ll listen to two PhD’s — Madhugar Travedi and Vikram Patel speak about their efforts in Texas to do universal screening for depression and then get patients to the appropriate care, here at the numbers you’ll hear:

  • 44,000 people in the study
  • 12-15% tested positive for symptoms of depression in three or more office visits
  • Ultimately, 1% saw a mental health profession and the rest were treated by their General Practitioner who discussed diet, exercise, alcohol consumption, sleep and disclosure (talking about it)

Great news on the front of PREEMPTIVE MENTAL HEALTH… we’ll talk about it.
