John Ligato was a PFC in Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment during the battle of Hue City, during the Tet Offensive in Vietnam in 1968. John would go on to become a legendary undercover agent for the FBI, have a successful career in radio broadcasting and now as a writer. He joined ALL MARINE RADIO to discuss his most recent book, “The Gunny” — which tells the story of the Marines and Sailors of Alpha 1/1 as well as their leader — GySgt John Canley, the nation’s most recent Congressional Medal of Honor recipient.
John walks us through his path to the Marine Corps, takes us on Alpha Company’s path to Hue City (Quang Tri & Con Tien) in 1968 and ultimately inside the fighting that the company did Hue City. As interesting to this story is what John learned in his writing of the book from other Marines who were a room away or a block away from him and the path that SgtMaj Canley’s Medal of Honor took after being rejected on ten different occasions. GREAT STUFF!
