Commander Ernest Evans wanted to be a Marine as a young man but wound up attending the US Naval Academy and becoming a surface warfare officer in the US Navy. Commander Evans was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions while commanding the USS Johnston during the Battle of Samar on October 25, 1944 One thing is certainly clear… he fought the USS Johnston like a Marine.
